Are you eligible to vote?

You may register to vote if you are:

A resident of New Mexico

A citizen of the United States

Eighteen years old or older at the time of the next election

An individual who has not been denied the right to vote by a court of law due to reason of mental incapacity.

A convicted felon who has satisfied all the terms and conditions of sentencing. A certificate of completion must be provided.  

Are you registered to vote?

Eligible voters must register to vote.  The following are ways to register:

  • Online through the Secretary of State's website. Click here for Secretary of State website
  • Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office Monday-Friday 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. -  However, the Clerk's Office is currently closed to the public due to the coronavirus public health emergency so please call the office. (505) 468-1291
  • Secretary of State’s Office
  • Any County Clerk’s Office in New Mexico
  • Through a Third Party Registrant Agent
  • Motor Vehicle Department, Human Services Department, public libraries, colleges, universities, and at organized voter registration drives

Bernalillo County residents may request an application for voter registration be sent to you by emailing clerk@bernco.gov, calling (505) 468-1291 and selecting the Voter Registration option, or sending a letter to: Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office, One Civic Plaza, NW, Room 6022, Albuquerque, NM 87102.

Same Day Voter Registration

It is now possible to register to vote during early voting periods in New Mexico.   Here is the Bernalllo County  same day voter registration schedule for the 2020 General Election.  Same day voter registration is not available on Election Day.

Requesting an Absentee Ballot

The  Bernalillo County Clerk's Office will mail an absentee application to all registered

voters in Bernalillio County who have not already requested one on September 14, 2020. Please check your voter registration now to ensure all info is correct. If the name and address on your voter registration is correct, you do not need to do anything to receive an absentee application. If you don't want to wait, however, please select an option below.

Complete the absentee application online on the New Mexico Voter Information Portal at Vote.org  

You must have a NM driver's license or state ID to use this option. 

Download the absentee application form. Print, complete and mail (or hand deliver) to the Bernalillo County Clerk’s office. 

Request an application by email. Send your request to clerk@bernco.gov and an application will be mailed to you.

Request an application by phone by calling (505) 243-VOTE (8683) option 2 and it will be mailed to you. 

Returning your absentee ballot by mail or drop-off option

In Bernalillo County, you may return your completed absentee ballot by mail or by hand delivery.

There are options for voters to return their absentee ballot. Whether you mail or hand deliver your absentee ballot, it must be prepared the same way: selections made on the ballot, ballot inserted into the privacy and mailing envelopes, voter signature and last 4 entered under the privacy flap, envelope sealed. Your absentee ballot will be rejected if these instructions are not followed.  

By Mail

Voters may return their absentee ballot by mail. Election officials and the U.S. Postal Service state that ballots mailed from a Bernalillo County location on or before Oct. 27, 2020 will arrive by 7 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3, 2020.  After Oct. 27, please personally deliver your ballot to ensure it arrives on time.

By Hand Delivery

Voters may return their absentee ballot in person. The absentee ballot must be prepared as if it were to be mailed (see above) or it will be rejected.

October 6-16, 2020 - Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m at:

Clerk's Annex - 1500 Lomas Blvd NW, Suite A

Expo NM - Enter fair grounds through Gate 3 at Copper and San Pedro and follow signs to drop off location in midway area next to the Bernalillo County Clerk's Mobile Voting Unit.

October 17-31, 2020 

Any of the Early Voting Convenience Centers - Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Expo NM - Enter fair grounds through Gate 3 at Copper and San Pedro and follow signs to drop off location in midway area next to the Bernalillo County Clerk's Mobile Voting Unit. - Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

November 3, 2020 - 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Any of the Election Day Voting Convenience Centers 

Drop off location in front of City Hall on Marquette and 5th Street (drive in left lane west on Marquette from 3rd street, watch for signs and personnel). Voters will drop off their ballot through a car window and receive an "I Voted" sticker.

Early Voting Begins October 6!

You may vote in-person or return your completed absentee ballot.
